7 - Jason Derulo – Cheyenne
The constantly-chugging bassline mixed with the stadium drums and heavy synth, give this song an undeniable 80's pop ballad feel, and this video matches that vibe to perfection. It comes across as a modern take on MJ's 'Thriller', but with a creepy factor that rivals today's horror films (instead of disco zombies, like in Thriller. Man, the 80s, amirite!?)
Source6 - Big Sean – Play No Games ft. Chris Brown, Ty Dolla $ign
If Jason Derulo's video for Cheyenne is channeling the feel of the 80s, then Big Sean went full 90s on Play No Games. The camera and editing techniques used, make you feel like you are watching every TV sitcom from 1991.
Source5 - Kendrick Lamar – Alright
Kendrick's new video for Alright, with deep lyrics and heavily philosophical themes and voice-over, fits well into his style. Usually, Kendrick takes satisfaction in his ability to highlight areas of humanity that we might be less than proud of. Alright, however, is basically a slap I the face to any of those faults that might get you down. After all, no matter what happens, “I'm gunna be alright!”
Source4 - Selena Gomez – Good For You
I've got to be honest, this video surprised me. There is no plot; there is no story. There are no characters and there is barely even a setting. It's just three minutes and fifteen seconds of Selena Gomez squirming around in different places. Why am I surprised? ...because I loved every second of it.
Source3 - Silentó - Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)
Although the song has been out for over half a year, the release of Silentó's music video for Watch Me has rejuvenated the popularity of the song, online. The video features dozens of different fan-submitted videos showing them and their friends doing the Nae Nae dance. Allowing your fans to participate in your creations will always sit well with me. Props Silentó! (whoever the hell you are)
Source2 - Skrillex and Diplo - Where Are Ü Now with Justin Bieber
Another video featuring a huge fan participation is the new video for Where Are Ü Now, from Diplo and Skrillex (AKA, Jack Ü), and featuring Justin Bieber. The creators of the video took thousands of frames from footage of Justin Bieber, and hung them up in a gallery in Los Angeles. They then invited fans to come into the gallery and draw/paint on the frames, which they then put back together into what ended up being the final video. Parts of the video show just how large of a project it was to have so many artists all working in a room together. With this technique, through many different parts of the video, you can see hundreds of peoples art flashing past on the screen during the video itself! How cool! I really appreciate this kind of mass collaboration.
Source1 - Rihanna – Bitch Better Have My Money | (NSFW!)
Wow. What is there to say about this video? Directed by Rihanna, herself, she did not hold back anything in this video. I'll just let you take it in yourself, BUT, you have been warned: there is nudity, scenes depicting torture and violence, and just all around badass-ery. So, like, you know. Don't show your grandma.
