There are over 200 countries on Earth. This might seem like a lot, because we usually only hear about the big ones, but there are dozens of countries smaller in population, even, than a city. Here are the top ten smallest countries by population, all of which having less citizens than a small town.

10 - Dominica – pop. 72,660
The Commonwealth of Dominica is an island country in the Caribbean Sea. The island is the newest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by volcanic activity. From this geothermal activity, the island hosts the world's second largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. There is also heavy rainfall within the interior of the island, and when mixed with the high-peaked mountains of the island, create the 365 rivers contained within the country.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands is located near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, just west of the International Date Line. The population is spread across 24 coral atolls, forming 1,156 individual islands. With a population of 56 thousand, this gives an average of about 50 people per island, although, there are some islands with larger towns, and some islands with few or no people at all.

The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis is a two-island country in the West Indies. In both area and population, it's the smallest country in the Americas. The islands were the first Caribbean Islands to be colonized by the British and French, giving it the nickname, “The Mother Colony of the West Indies”.

The Principality of Liechtenstein is a double landlocked microstate, lying within the boarder of Switzerland and Austria. Liechtenstein has the highest GDP per person in the world, and is also the second richest country in the world, when measured by amount of money per person. It also boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world, at only 1.5%.

The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign city-state on the French coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Because of this, France surrounds the country on three sides, with the fourth side being Mediterranean coastal beaches. With an area of less than 1 square miles (0.78 miles²), it is the second smallest country, behind only Vatican City. It also has the second highest population density, with about 50 thousand people per square mile. This equates to about 560 square feet of land per person; about the size of a small apartment.

The Republic of San Marino is a microstate surrounded by Italy. It is only around 24 square miles in area. San Marino also claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world, being founded 1,714 years ago, on September 3rd, 301 CE.

It is the smallest recognized country in the world, in both area and population, with an area of only 110 acres and a population of just 842 citizens. The city is home to the highest ranked Catholic clergy in the world, and is ruled by the Bishop of Rome - the Pope.
